Mortice Locks

Here at Glaziere Glazing & Locks we have been replacing mortice locks in Lewisham, Sidcup, Swanley and the surrounding areas for many years.

Mortice locks (also known as mortice deadlocks) are a type of lock which are designed to be fitted into the timber edge of a door. They are concealed within a pocket (a mortice) formed in the door edge with the lock faceplate and striking plate being fully visible only when the door is in the open position.

The door is manually locked from both sides with a key. A mortice lock has a lock bolt only and does not have a latch/catch section for the operation of a door knob/handle.

They are also commonly referred to as Chubb Locks as Chubb had a long standing history of manufacturing them up until 2010. Even though Chubb no longer manufacture this particular brand they are still manufactured by Assa Abloy under their Union brand.

Mortice locks are available as either 3 or 5 lever.

5 lever mortice locks are commonly fitted in timber front or back doors. Required by insurance companies, a 5 lever deadlock is suitable for an exterior door and provides security in the form of additional "levers" inside the lock. This makes it more difficult to copy keys or break into.

3 lever deadlocks are for internal wooden doors. As the name implies, there are only 3 levers in this type of lock, which makes it unsuitable for external doors. This is a good choice, however, for internal rooms where privacy is required and lockable access is needed from both sides.

We do commonly find 3 lever locks on external doors but we are able to upgrade your existing 3 lever lock to a 5 lever lock, including the high security range which has the British Standard BS3621 kitemark.

There are many types of mortice locks on the market and and when we assess mortice locks for replacement, we ensure that the correct type and grade of lock is selected with regard to the door furniture being used, security needs and door function. By correctly specifying the correct mortice lock for your door it will enhance the doors operation and security.
